Tolpi is a Romanian handcrafted
bag using precious leather and made by a talented craftsman from Romania.
A beautiful country situated in
intersection of Central and Southeastern Europe, Romania has given a lot of
precious treasures to the entire world. One of them is the wonderful traditional
Romanian handcraft leather.
Tolpi is a derivation of “Tolba din
piele” which would be translated in English as “Tolba from leather”. In the
Romanian language the word “tolba” refers to a traditional bag made from
leather or other different type of material, used for carrying or storing food,
the venison or different items.
The manufacturing process for this type of bags
reflects many generations of knowledge and skills development in leather craft.
Made for the first time many years ago, by our ancestors, “tolba” was a very
useful instrument to store essential gear or hunting items.
There are thousands of ways in
which the talented hands of our ancestors have been crafting these bags. Handed
down from generation to generation, but preserving the personality of Romanian
people, nowadays “tolba” comes in various forms, shapes and colors, each reflecting
true treasures of beauty.
Our bags are made at 60 km from
Iasi, a city situated in the north-eastern part of Romania, by Ion Ilioaia, a
craftsman that has been using his talent gathering a
prolific experience in manufacturing these wonderful leather bags.
These
one-of-a-kind creations come from both heart and mind, as a result of
experience and aptitudes transmitted usually in the family circle. Craftsman Ion still works by hand using his skills
to cut and sew the leather and to create a huge variety of bags, all of an
exceptional make and quality.
He puts passion in his works and
strives to protect the authenticity of the handcraft, something our society is
losing.
